We didn't have a bonfire or big display of fireworks - our garden is so small that we'd probably set something on fire - but after tea we went out side and waved some sparklers around in the damp air, trying to draw circles and write our names. Bella was endlessly entertained by them and waved them around with abandon, but Angus eyed them suspiciously and was not at all keen to hold one. He was happy to watch. I took photos while John moaned about the box of matches and said we should've bought a lighter.
It's suddenly so cold. The weather has really shifted over the last week and now winter does not feel all that far away. Bonfire night brings out the nostalgic traditionalist in me. We ate sausages, jacket potatoes and baked beans for tea, the sort of food I associate with this night from my own childhood. I've made Yorkshire parkin, a tradition that is new to me but one I have happily adopted. When the kids are in bed we'll eat some parkin with a cup of tea and watch Homeland. We've just started on the first series and are already hooked.
It's fairy light city round here now. Once it starts to get dark I switch them on and they add a little cosy cheer to dark corners. They remind me a bit of fireworks now I think of it. It's been all go on the Christmas present making front too, I'll have some bits and bobs to show you soon I hope.
We were in UK last week, for our half term break and we have visited friends in Berkshire. Their son school had a Bonfire night, so we happily discovered this tradition and liked it...
ReplyDeleteWe hid out instead of attending the local bonfire - it's very wet and windy here. I love your photos though and am now very tempted to buy some sparklers:)
ReplyDeleteYour sparkler pictures are amazing Gillian, so clear and lovely. Glad you had a nice evening. xx
ReplyDeleteStaying in with the animals tonight. I love sparklers, writing your name in the air :) xx
ReplyDeleteBella looks like she is having a lot of fun with those sparklers! We have just borrowed the first series of Homeland and are planning to start watching it this evening!

Hi Gillian
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures - I can practically smell the sparklers !
Love your fairy lights - I'm a firm believer that fairy lights are for all year round, not just Christmas.
Enjoy your cake and tv,
Kate x
I love your sparkler photos. Bella looks like she is enjoying herself! We often do sparklers with the kids on New Year's Eve; we buy them in the summer for July Fourth and save a few to use later. I haven't watched Homeland but I've heard a lot of good things about it, and of course I love Claire Danes. I was one of those very disappointed teenagers who faithfully watched "My So-Called Life" until they abruptly cancelled it. I look forward to seeing your creations!
ReplyDeleteOh I love sparklers ... and Homeland is fab ... we're watching the current series ... you'll love it ... Bee xx
ReplyDeleteWe did the same with sparklers Gillian, it's always good fun to make shapes and write words. The first series of Homeland is really good, I hope you enjoy watching as you munch away on parkin x look forward to seeing your Christmas makes xox Penny
ReplyDeleteWe didn't have sparklers this year as my partner's away and it was a little rainy here earlier. I've been hiding inside...catching up on blogs and watching tv, I'm late to the Homeland party but am hoping to catch up with it soon. I'm really looking forward to seeing your Christmas makes.
ReplyDeleteLove the sparkler photos! Looking forward to seeing photos of your Christmas makes. x
ReplyDeleteSparklers are my favourite part of guy fawkes! Lovely pictures x
ReplyDeleteFantastic sparklers! And the fairy lights are simply wonderful, I'm all for a little magic lighting all year round! Enjoy Homeland - Damien Lewis has such a perfect American accent, it is actually strange hearing him speak 'normally' on interview shows! Chrissie x
ReplyDeleteI went to a party with fireworks a while back, on a windy night, and it took ages to light them. Last night someone brought a creme brulee blowtorch, which did a cracking job. Useful if you ever want a creme brulee as well. I love the last picture, can't wait to see what you've been making (and if there are any ideas I can steal...)
ReplyDeleteI miss Bonfire night ..... living in the Netherlands now and I just get to hear about all the fun from family and friends. But netherverless we still ate Jacket Potatoes and beans for tea ... childhood memories too !! I look forward to seeing your next post with your all your bits and bobs...
ReplyDeleteSparklers are the best! Great pic did you use a slow shutter speed? I love Parkin but haven't made it for years, time to get the mixing bowl out. Xxx
ReplyDeleteI think so Mags - I'm not really sure! I've just learnt what buttons to press to get approximately the result I want, but have no clue about the technical bits behind it. I really should go on a photography course... x
DeleteFantastic sparkler photos. We always had jacket potatoes and sausages on Bonfire Night and Heinz tomato soup too. Good luck with your Christmas present making, I have started mine but it suddenly feels much closer than I thought!
ReplyDeleteI'm sucha child still about Bonfire night. Sparklers are such fun. We had a few rockets but you're right the weather has really shifted. Brrrrrrrrrrrr ! Jacqui xox
ReplyDeleteFab sparkly photos, that brought back many a memory of my childhood. Sadly it was to wet here for any action outside so instead we enjoyed the warmth inside, it sure is getting pretty chilly! I will be! making Parkin this week to join in the tradition. Xoxo
ReplyDeletelovely Gillian, I had forgotten about sparklers, perhaps I should have got some! I remember my dad used to nail a catherine wheel onto the gate post! (is that what they were called?) Heather x
ReplyDeleteGreat sparkler pics! I spent bonfire night indoors curled up on the sofa with our pups but going to a display tomorrow night so hope the rain lets up. We're hooked on Homeland too - enjoy.
ReplyDeleteXx
Your sparkler photos are absolutely gorgeous - so evocative! I love parkin and can eat it any time! It's supposed to improve with keeping but I can never bring myself to leave it to find out! Enjoy! E x
ReplyDeleteYes it's really turned cold, we've in a great position here and tend to just watch other people's fireworks out of the bedroom window! Those lights are really pretty :) x
ReplyDeleteIt is getting cooler your right! Your sparkler photos are great especially the full circle with a happy face in the middle hehe xx
ReplyDeleteHomelands is addictive.....enjoy x
ReplyDeleteGreat sparkler pics....young man headed to a cubs bonfire so myself and the little lady enjoyed sparkling last night too whilst watching the neighbourhood displays.....great fun...glad you had a great night :) Hugs Elisa x
ReplyDeleteHomeland is definitely addictive from that very first episode, I was hooked!
ReplyDeleteI have such fond memories of "family get togethers" on bonfire night when I was little. Always on the 5th Nov, no waiting for the nearest weekend for us.
We tried last year to revive the event for our grand daughters but they didn't like the fireworks at all, spent the whole time with their hands over their ears and crying!
(They enjoyed the soup, sausages and jacket potatoes though!!)
Tht last picture of Bella is fab!! I have heard good things about Homeland. I think it may be my winter 'thing' to watch. I've watched all the Prime Suspects this past. few weeks. I find homicide and knitting go well together! I have been furiosly making too, but I can't wait to see your stuff though. You always have such lovely ideas.
ReplyDeleteLeanne xx
Oh and thanks for the nice comment about my dress. It's an old Boden number. I bought it for a wedding about six years ago. It's a favourite of mine. xx
Sounds like our kind of Firework's night. DD doesn't like the bangs so sparkler's are probably the only thing acceptable. Love your fairy light pictures too and I can't wait to see what you've been up to, the bells look very promising!
ReplyDeleteS x
It is so satisfying to get a good sparkler photograph, I remember doing it a few years ago and didn't stop going on about it! Yours are great. Jo x
ReplyDeleteI love your fairy lights. Where did you get them?
ReplyDelete:-)
Hi Sooz.
DeleteThey are from Cable and Cotton. http://cableandcotton.co.uk. They come in sets of 20, 35 or 50. You can buy pre-selected colours or pick and mix your own. I love them, I have to say.
Gillian x
What lovely photos! Love your photos of the sparkler's. =)
ReplyDeleteGreat photos, and it looks like a really fun night! I love your fairy lights! I am thinking of pulling mine out of the attic to help brighten the dark evenings.
ReplyDeleteThat smile says it all!
ReplyDeleteLisa x
As a child i always loved playing with sparklers and i would try to write my name with my sparkler like pen.
ReplyDeleteI love fairy lights, I need to get mine out too! Can't wait to see what you've been making for Christmas!
ReplyDeleteFairy lights and sparklers ... what could be better with winter knocking at the door. These images have taken me right back to my childhood. I got home after a long day on Tuesday to discover that the Mr had bought three boxes of sparklers just for the two of us ... we had such fun :)
ReplyDeleteI love the coloured yarn lights - my home could use a splash of colour.
ReplyDeleteWhere are they from please?
Many thanks
Anna
Hi Anna. They are from Cable and Cotton. http://cableandcotton.co.uk/
DeleteGillian x
great photos Gillian! I so wanted to have a sparkler on bonfire night, it's a bit weird to do that without children though isn't it?! x
ReplyDeleteI hope not Charmaine. Hubby and I had a packet each with no children in sight! xx
