The happiest people don't have the best of everything, they just make the best of everything.
Joining in with my friend Jen at little birdie, here is my final selection of happy moments from my week for the 52 Weeks of Happy Project.
1. I got my knitting mojo back.
2. I bought a pretty necklace over the summer and managed to break it on the first day of our holiday in France. I was in a market and was carrying my handbag on one shoulder, my big camera around my neck, and a hot and tired Angus on my shoulders at the same time. The poor chain on that necklace stood no chance! It's lucky I noticed the chain had snapped before I lost it. I took it to a little watch repair place in town to be repaired this week and the man just fixed it for me, there and then, and refused to take any payment for it. A kind gesture.
3. I won Mag's giveaway a while back and collected the parcel from the post office today. It contained, among other things, three balls of Noro Silk Garden yarn. It feels quite unusual, but in a good way, and I can imagine is has a wonderful wieght and drape to it when it's knitted or crocheted up. I've never worked with variegated yarn before, or silk, and am looking forward to finding a use for this. Thank you Mags.
4. I spent a joyful couple of hours with Bella this afternoon on the sofa, crocheting and watching Strictly Come Dancing. I don't usually go in for this sort of tv but have a weakness for this particular programme. I love the glitter! And so does Bella and it's nice to be able to share this with her now that she's a little older.
So, it's the last week in Jen's project. That quote above isn't mine by the way. I don't know it's exact origins (I have tried to find the original source without any luck) but after Jen included it in her first post I decided to keep it up there throughout this project as I felt it said everything that needed to be said.
I have really, really, enjoyed taking part in this project. It is good for me to remind myself of the things that make me happy throughout my week, and to be thankful for them. Sometimes they are big things - the children, friendship, letters from the queen - but mainly they are small things like the changing of the seasons, a charity shop bargain, a little posy from the garden, cooking or baking something that worked out, making something. A new magazine or some nice yarn. Often it's the little things that add up to big things, don't you find?
I don't think I'll continue with this project but I'd like to find another way - my own way - of celebrating these small things on a regular basis. This is common throughout blogland - I can think of lots of people who celebrate "This Moment", "Reasons to be cheerful", "Simple Pleasures", "Gratefuls" etc and I just need to find a way of doing this that suits me. Thank you for reading and for all your comments - it's wonderful to know that you've enjoyed this as much as I have. And thanks to Jen, whose brilliant idea this was!

Love that neat knitting no wonder that is making you happy! Jo x
ReplyDeleteLove the knitting, colour, pattern everything. Glad you got the parcel. I have really enjoyed your 52 weeks of happy, many times it as made me notice the little things and also reminded me of earlier happy times, thanks so much for sharing them. Xx
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed reading your happy moments over the past year. I too have fancied doing a bit of knitting in between the crochet, so I've knitted some new dishcloths as the last ones I made are just about worn out now. Glad you managed to get your necklace fixed, it's so pretty.
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely happy things for your final post. Well done on the full year. I'm at week 40 and am really glad I joined in, but like you, am going to find my own way of doing this once I've done the full year.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed reading along with your happies for the past year. I'm so glad to know other people who treasure simple, happy moments as much as I do.
ReplyDeleteKeep hold of all your happy thoughts for a rainy day.
ReplyDeleteSome lovely happies to end your year of happies Gillian. I am sure that you will continue with this in your own way, and we will all be here to share them with you. Great knitting by the way!
ReplyDeleteI too have enjoyed these posts, hope you find a way to mark the week. I find it a good way to keep me grounded :)
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed your happy posts and it has made me realise the importance of the little things that make you happy :-) loving your knitting too - that pattern looks lovely x
ReplyDeleteLove that beautiful textured piece of knitting. And I love your happy things too. It would be great if you could find a way to continue with them in some form.
ReplyDeleteI've thoroughly enjoyed your 52 weeks of happy and am quite sad it's come to an end. I've been thinking about doing something similar myself - it's so important to appreciate the small things.
ReplyDeleteYay for the return of your knitting mojo!
Heather x
I'm glad you're going to continue in your own way because I would miss your photos! I'm glad you got your necklace fixed, I have a jar of jewelry that needs repaired and one day I will manage it and it will be like all new jewelry!
ReplyDeleteTammy xx
Beautiful knitting photo!
ReplyDeleteGreetings, RW & SK
Thank you for sharing your happy things each week, and I'm sure you'll keep the spirit of the project even if you don't have a dedicated post each week - I find that every post is full of happy, with the creativity and craft and fun! Your knitting is so beautiful, and I love Noro, I am looking for a perfect pattern for a project...Chrissie x
ReplyDeletePretty colour for the knitting and love that little necklace and pity your happy things are ending. Have enjoyed it a lot and take care.
ReplyDeleteI've loved reading your 52 weeks of happy posts. Agree with Pink Milk, important to appreciate the little things. Have a lovely weekend, Sarah xo
ReplyDeleteI've so enjoyed these posts of yours, it really is those little things that bring the most pleasure. It's a bit like grazing throughout the day rather than stuffing yourself with one meal and being too full to enjoy it! :) x
ReplyDeleteSome lovely happies Gillian and how very kind of the man to fix your beautiful necklace for nothing. I'm always in awe when people still do this and it always touches mr beyond words. There are so many kind people out there. I'm not a strictly watcher, honestly I know if I start I will be addicted. I think it's lovely that you can share this with Bella. I have so enjoyed your weekly happies but yes you're right we all do it in our own way and I have no doubt that you will find yours. Your knitting looks lovely and I LOVE the colour you're using, I'm pleased you've got your mojo back. Just in reply to your question, yes those fabric pumpkins are super easy to make, the link on my blog will guide you through it. It really doesn't take much time at all just a good strong tommy thumb. Have a lovely Sunday and thank you for your sweet comments xoxo
ReplyDeleteLots of lovely happys. Your knitting is super neat! Lovely colour yarn too. Sounds like a great giveaway lucky you. Like you I don't usually like programmes like strictly but my daughter and I have struck up a mutual love of pretty dresses and the glitter xx
ReplyDeletewell done for keeping up the happies! it's been a pleasure to see. Love to see all your creative endeavors too, the knitting is lovely, really one of my favourite colours. The new wool, could make a nice hat. I forget where you got your necklace, it's lovely, Heather x
ReplyDeleteWhen someone offers to do something for nothing it restores your faith in humanity. Very seldom do you get that, and I bet it made your day?! I expect he felt good about it too :) I'm glad you'll continue to share your 'happies' in some form, despite not continuing with Jen's project, as I've loved seeing them pop up on a regular basis. Your couple of hours on the sofa with Bella sound lovely and cosy. It's wet and dull here today, so a dose of 'Strictly' glitz and glamour on the results show tonight will be most welcome. I wonder who's going home tonight, hmmmm? x
ReplyDeleteAs Brits do you think people find it uncomfortable saying we are thankful for something or good at something?
ReplyDeleteI have also tried to adopt this on my blog. I will continue. Thanks for spurring me on.
Love the necklace
Congrats on finishing this project! I enjoyed exploring your happy things too.
ReplyDeleteI have so, so enjoyed these weekly snippets of joy Gillian. I totally agree that it is the little things that make the world turn joyfully and what a treat for your kids to be able to look back through their year as well. mel x
ReplyDeleteI've really enjoyed following your 52 weeks - I don't think I could be that disciplined to put something together each week. I am trying to keep a "Project Life" photo album - but have adapted the concept :)
ReplyDeleteHope you are having a good weekend - it is so wet and dismal here.

I forgot to say - making a ripple isn't difficult - and in fact has a certain rhythm as you do crochet. I found it a relaxing project to have. x
DeleteWell done for sharing a lovely year of happies - I've enjoyed following along with you.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely new week ahead,
xx
I'm sure you would have been so sad to have lost such a pretty necklace, thank goodness you spotted the break in the chain and how kind of the watchmaker to have fixed it for free!
ReplyDeleteI have had the 'best things in life' saying at the front of my diary now for the last few years, i think it is such a wonderful way to live life.
Lisa x
I love the colour of your pale blue yarn. And funnily enough, I've just started knitting a cowl with some Noro yarn - a different blend though. Looking forward to seeing what you do with yours. x
ReplyDeleteOh I love the colour of that wool - just gorgeous. I hope you find a way of celebrating the small things - it's easy to overlook those brief moments in a busy week isn't it? x
ReplyDeleteIt's been fun following along with you! So glad you were ablemtomrescue your pretty necklace and I love that yarn!!
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed reading your 52 Weeks posts--but then, I enjoy most all your posts! And looking at that knitting makes my resolve to get back to knitting a sure thing. That looks like a really cool pattern.
ReplyDeleteCrikey, that's gone quickly! I've not had time for blogging over the last few weeks and can't believe your year is over. Lovely pictures you've shared. I know what you mean about a project that makes you think and appreciate things. I joined in an advent one a couple of years ago Love is... each day at what was quite a tough time. It made me look for something good each day and was a welcome distraction from everything else going on!
ReplyDeleteEllie x
I have enjoyed your 52 weeks posts so much! I absolutely love your necklace!
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining in every week and being a part of 52 Weeks - it's been lovely seeing your happy things. So pleased you got your necklace fixed! x
ReplyDeleteWell done for managing a year. I have to say me and the boys love Strictly, it is our guilty pleasure.
ReplyDeleteOh Gillian your knitting is just gorgeous ... I love the colour and the pattern ... I've loved following along with your happies and also completing my own but like you I want to find another way of blogging my happy things for the coming year ... wishing you a wonderfully happy year ahead ... Bee xx
ReplyDeleteI love your quote, this has been an inspirational series... and congratulations for the commitment.
ReplyDeleteI've loved popping in to see your Happies each week Gillian. Always such a pleasure. You inspired me to start the project at the beginning of the year, which I really enjoyed but just couldn't keep up with it (or any other link-up if I'm honest) on a weekly basis. But I really like the concept too so hope to somehow incorporate simple pleasures into my Posts on a general basis...x
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful celebration of life to have stored, ready to look back on whenever you want a reminder :-)
ReplyDeleteWow, amazing blog layout! How lengthy have you ever been blogging for?
ReplyDeleteyou make blogging glance easy. The full glance of your
