September. One foot in summer, one in autumn. I like it.
I always feel that change is coming at this time of year, I just can't shake that back to school, new pencil case feeling of anticipation that arrives around now. It's my New Year. I'm much more inclined to embark on something new in September than I ever am after Christmas. This week has been strange, as though things are shifting and settling around here. We went straight from the glow of post-holiday happiness into cooler weather, washing (so much washing!) and the chores and jobs that accompany the return to school. Name labels were sew on, PE bags completed and packed, lists checked. Bella started Year 2 yesterday and appears to be loving it so far. She described her first day as "quite fun". She took to school easily from day one and enjoys the environment and her friends there. Angus's first day is tomorrow and I'm not sure what to expect. He has been unsettled and grumpy today - I think he is feeling the change as much as we are. He will be one of the younger ones in his class and I can't help feeling that he's too young for school. My baby. I hope he doesn't cry when we drop him off tomorrow morning. I hope I don't cry in front of him.
And things are also odd - but in a nice way - because John is around all the time and I am so used to having the house to myself during the day. So far, I quite like Redundancy John. He mows the lawn, cooks tea and replaces the tile on the kitchen floor that's been chipped for months. He makes tea loaf and washes the car. He is very useful. But job hunting starts with a vengeance tomorrow. We don't have an office in our house and have found that trying to do anything requiring any real concentration on the laptop at the dining room table while the kids are around is impossible. There will be no distractions (or excuses) tomorrow.
The garden is also shifting and changing. The leaves look dry and the colour is slowly leaving petals and leaves. I quite like the garden around now. It's past it's best, but it served us well all through the summer and I am more relaxed with it. No need to bother about weeding much. No need to fret about how well things are growing, as the party is over. In another month I'll be giving it an autumn tidy up. Putting it to bed for the winter. Not just yet though, there is still colour out there and I picked a small posy this afternoon while Angus as I were outside. The weather has been gorgeous today, warm and sunny and breezy. Good laundry weather. Our sunflowers are starting to fade so I will pick the good ones soon then cut back the rest. The raspberries that just appear, every summer, and yield a couple of bowlfuls of fruit at best, are doing really well. I've no idea why they are flourishing but I love going out there and picking a handful then eating them with yogurt on my granola for breakfast. The tomatoes appear to be doing well. People who know about gardening - will they turn much more red or should I pick them soon? We have a few red ones but mostly green. To be honest, I don't mind if they stubbornly refuse to ripen as I love green tomato chutney.
And while I'm feeling retrospective, here a a few of August's Instagrams. My favourite is the yarb-bombed exericise bike I saw outside a really hippy cafe in Angouleme.
I love your photos. The fresh raspberries look delicious. Looking forward to sharing my Spring and Summer seasons with you. Have a great week Gillian xo
ReplyDeleteI am not a tomato grower, but I am a green tomato chutney lover, so if you are willing to wait and see I would leave them, if they ripen all well and good, if not, chutney a go go. I guess the risk would be if a frost comes before they ripen, if so you will have to run out and pick them all quickly. You could pick the green ones and put them in a cardboard box with a banana, and that will ripen them - the ethylene from the banana causes the toms to ripen.
ReplyDeleteHope that the job searching goes well and that the children enjoy the return/start of school.
I have a similar autumnal vibe in our home, I think it's rather nice and settling, once I got over the initial 'change is in the air' feeling...Chrissie x
ReplyDeleteGood luck with all the changes happening at your house. I am sure you will all do just fine. I feel change in the air here too, it's cooling off just a little bit, you can especially feel in the early mornings.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed all your lovely photos - they sum up September so well. I'm with you on September being the new year. Do hope Angus settles into school - he sounds so sweet! Helen
ReplyDeleteI especially feel change this September, as Charlotte started preschool, and we now have a weekly schedule. I will be thinking of you tomorrow as you drop Angus off for his first day of school. I am happy to hear Bella's loves school, and I love her new shoes! My husband was between jobs a few years ago, and it was impossible for him to concentrate on his laptop with a (then) two year old running around, and we do not have a home office. He usually just went to library for quite time.
ReplyDeleteWow big changes afoot in your house, hope Mr finds a new job soon. Funny to think of little ones barely older than my two starting school, they're just so little! Mine are December babies so still another year with me :) Hope your little man loves it xx
ReplyDeleteLovely photos Gillian....I love this time of year too, that autumnal feel in the air. I hope Angus' first day of school goes well :)

Hope everything works out with all the changes going on in your lives. Love the gym bags! They are fab.

September is my favourite month, it's so reliable. My kids are all grown up and three out of four have left home now, but that "New Year" feeling at the end of summer still persists with me, and, like you, I find it a better time to start new things.
ReplyDeleteOnce the tomatoes start to show a little bit orange you can pick them, bring them in and put them in a bowl, if you have already ripe ones put them together, they'll soon ripen. Leave the very green ones on the vine for as long as you can, some will begin to ripen, others wont.
I love your photos, good luck to Angus.
Joy xx
Angus's first day, I hope he has a wonderful time today. I've still got lots of green tomatoes on the plants too, but there's plenty of time for them to ripen yet so leave them where they are. There's no finer taste than home grown tomatoes.
ReplyDeleteBack to school for me too....I have never escaped that feeling working in a school!
ReplyDeleteYou can leave your tomatoes for a while my mum puts almost ripe tomatoes in a brown paper bag in the tea towel drawer to ripen!?
Leave the sunflower heads for the birds....they love them in our garden.
Xxx
I somehow felt a bit calmer and more optimistic reading your post! I think I panic a bit when summer is over maybe it's because I work in a college or it signalled dan going back to uni. Dan was the youngest in his class and it was hard. Sometimes he got upset and I felt terrible but he never stayed like that for long. I made it clear to the teachers he wasn't to be pushed e.g in reading because the youngest ones aren't always ready and they get there in the end ... He did. Good luck, hugs to you I think it can be traumatic for you as we'll! Xxx
ReplyDeleteHa Ha, I love it, your life is so like mine! My girl has the same shoes, I made them pump bags, our chickens are still laying and our raspberries are going strong. Glad you are moving with the changing tide of Autumn term. Love Jo x
ReplyDeleteRoll on Autumn and enjoy the extra set of hands. x
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos....
ReplyDeleteI too love this tie of year..very reflective and subtle.
Pop your tomatoes in a drawer wrapped in paper towel that should do the trick and changing colour!
Happy Autumnal wishes
Tilly x
Good luck to all concerned!
ReplyDeleteDear Gillian
ReplyDeleteI love September and October too - all the colours of autumn to look forward to and the garden gently changing. You have had a very busy time. Your breakfast photo is making me feel really hungry! Hope the school starting goes well and that neither of you cry!
Best wishes
Ellie
I love your garden philosophy for September. I always feel a little depressed when the garden goes over and looks all weary and worn out, but your idea that it means you don't need to worry about it so much anymore appeals a great deal. Like you I think I'll now let it be and look forward to 'putting it to bed for the winter' next month instead!

PS I hope the 1st school day for Angus was ok!
Hi Gillian,Wow!!!So many changes!!!Hope Angus enjoys his first day at school!!!It's a very anxious time for you both!!!Change is always a challenge but maybe it will help to remember that you go through these emotions every year!!!Good luck to John with the job hunting and hope he finds something soon!!!Have a great day!!!

Welcome home and good luck for your kidlets at a new year of school. Grade 2 has been a blast for Roboboy, he has gone nuts reading which is such a milestone. And my Liongirl starts school in January so I am only a few months behind you, hope Angus settles easily, boys are a little tricker especially if they are young for the year. So nice to see the opposite change of season over your way too, we are getting gorgeous light spring sunshine and blue skies, perfect for moving house! mel x
ReplyDeleteLovely pics and post Gillian! Good luck to Angus and John - hope it goes well for both of them. It's finally warming up here a bit - thank goodness. We've had so much rain so I'm glad for a bit of sunshine. x
ReplyDeleteRedundancy John sounds very handy (though I'm guessing Employed John will be rather handy, too). Funny, isn't it, that no matter how old we are or how old our kids are, September always has that connection to school days. I was out walking the other evening and got a whiff of something that instantly took me back to the first day of my last year in school, the year Hush Puppies brown suede brogues were all the rage.
ReplyDeleteI do think this lovely weather is helping us ease into September and the new term. Teachers and children all seem to be in a good mood no matter what their age! Good luck with the job hunting. Claire xo
ReplyDeletehi gillian,
ReplyDeletelovely post and lovely photos.wish your kids luck! good luck with the job hunting!
have a nice day,
love regina
It's funny but I also feel like this is a new year for me (maybe because the little one will be at nursery and I'll more time to myself to actually do stuff!), I'm making resolutions and feeling full of renewed energy and optimism and I really want to find the time to be creative ( btw I've signed up for a crochet course!)!
ReplyDeleteHope Angus had a good day today! I'll be the one crying next week when I drop Yanis off I'm sure!!
PS: yes, that's Hello Kitty stamps you spotted on my blog! All the way from Japan.. I'm so lucky to have a really good Japanese friend who always brings us cute stuff back whenever she goes back :)
Hi Gillian,
ReplyDeleteI am quite jealous here, as I cannot let my laundry drying outside! We live near a farm and we have so many flies, a load of laundry drying outside would come back inside all dirty by the flies poo... It is true and very annoying!
We still have nearly two weeks before we start school again and I am trying to think on how to organize everything as my son will start year 6... We also have a wonderful weather and I hope it will last a bit...
Sometimes change is good, sometimes not so good but it always brings thoughtfullness and challenges. I hope yours bring you happiness within your family.
ReplyDeleteOh these pesky changes.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to have Marc on hand a little bit more, but can also understand the underlying stress of looking for a new job. And I'm sure Angus will be fine. I'm worrying about Sam at the moment. He doesn't cope well with change, and I think college is the biggest change of all.
Lovely photographs, as always.
A reflective post. Just how I'm feeling of late. Take it easy, Gillian.
Leanne xx
What great photos as per usual Gillian! Even though changes are afoot I am sure you will take them in your stride :) Good luck to Angus and Bella, school is a big world these days x And good luck to John... job hunting is no fun but the right one will turn up! Hazel x
ReplyDeleteGood luck to your husband with the job hunting, hope your little boy had a good start to school and that you both coped ok this morning!
ReplyDeleteRaspberry canes are something I would love to get for our garden, yummy fruit.
Great PE bags!
Lisa x
What lovely September photos. I love your PE bags there so cute. Loving the photo of the new school shoes.
ReplyDeleteHope that all the new school changes went well, my daughter started yesterday her first day of juniors. Don't know where the time goes xx
A lovely post as always Gillian. Your PE bags are gorgeous, I have been doing much the same here and it feels quite lovely when they are all done. Goodluck with tomorrow, I really hope that it all goes well for you both. I had to do the same with little Es two days ago and I won't lie, it was tough for us both. I shed a few tears dropping off and she shed a lot when I collected her. It is big changes for you all and it will take time to bed down. I am sure it must feel strange having hubby home, but equally nice. Goodluck with his job hunting. Best wishes for tomorrow xoxo
ReplyDeleteScary changes here as well. Good luck with yours. We need employment here. I don't know what the future holds at the moment. I hope your little man enjoys school. It's difficult for mums I think! You could try that tomato and see what it tastes like. If it's a Sungold one then it's done when it's orange. Hope you all have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteLovely post ... I like the thought of September being your New Year ... same for me ... hope Angus settles well at school ... Bee xx
ReplyDeletePS Your PE bags are so pretty ... the fabrics are fab ... x
The photos are lovely... I'm wondering how your son got on, I always hated when my babies started school, Its like my babies grew up and left me!!... Andy clung to my leg on his first day, his teacher had to pry him off of me! He's still as dramatic at 11 ha ha!... seriously I do hope he did ok... and I hope hubby got his job hunting in, that's quite a stressful task as well... but I sensed no stress in your post, just peace and a sense of contentment, exactly what I needed on this Thursday night. You always have down to earth and lovely posts.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend!
Tammy x
All the best to John for the job hunting -and I hope he gets all those jobs done around the house in the meantime!!
ReplyDeleteYes, that's September, a time to get down to business and focus but with all the abundance and promise of autumn to ease our way. Good luck to John :)
ReplyDeleteA lovely post - that made my day when I saw it earlier in the week. Beautiful words and pictures. I too feel more inclined to do things in September and make changes than in January when all I want to do is burrow away and hide for a few weeks after all the excitement of Christmas. I hope Angus has settled well and is enjoying his new adventures. I hope Mum is enjoying her extra time! x
ReplyDeleteHi Gillian, i like your post about September and the things you do at this time of the year. Im a September girl too, having been born on September 30. Lovely pictures.
