We are a very excited household tonight. We've been counting down the sleeps for weeks now, and there is just one more to go before tomorrow morning, when we go and collect our new whippet puppy.
We've met him a couple of times - this is him about four weeks ago:
He really is very cute.
The breeder, who is the nicest lady, has been regularly sending us photos of him as he grows.
They're not the best quality, sorry, but I will take many - so many! - more over the coming days and weeks.
I swing between feeling excited and terrified. I've been warned about sleepless nights, endless puddles and accidents, destroyed furniture, chewed shoes, I've even been told it's "like having a newborn in the house" (surely I'm not expected to breastfeed?!)
I think the reality will be a bit of all the above, and certainly a lot of disruption over the coming weeks and months, but a lot of love and joyful moments too.

He's gorgeous! I would say it's possibly even harder work than having a newborn in the house but it's also the biggest fun.

Oh he's so adorable, how exciting. We have that ball and that rope too, I think we must have gone to the same shop! I took Bertie to meet a friend's whippet puppy on Tuesday. She's gorgeous little thing, just ten weeks old, but she completely bossed Bertie around, he's a bit of a wuss I think. It might not be as bad as you expect - I found that in respect of some things, eg. less destruction than I was expecting. He's asleep at the moment, squashed in next to me, so all of the negative things have faded from my mind! Have a wonderful day, I shall look forward to hearing all about it. CJ xx

ReplyDeleteHow exciting, but also I understand it can be scary when something 'new' is happening. When you said about breast feeding, it brought to mind a news item here in Oz on TV last night about a boxer dog (I think), who was feeding a litter of piglets. It was an amazing story. Don't stress too much and take care. Look forward to seeing more pics.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting!! Our puppy is almost four months old and, yes, it is a bit like having a crazy toddler. I've had moments of thinking, "What on earth have we done??" which have slowly but surely made way for moments of pure joy and happiness that this little guy brings all of us. Enjoy!! And it does get easier!

ReplyDeletePossibly the cutest puppy ever! Apart from my Bertie, obviously 😉 Yes good luck with it all, it is pretty full on at first and yes, a bit like having a baby at times. But on the plus side, it *only* takes a year and most of all that is done and its fine. Unlike kids, they take blooming ages to grow up! 😂😂

ReplyDeleteHe looks lovely, very friendly too! It is hard, the hardest part for us was not having ANY sleep for over three weeks, it almost killed me! It went on for so long because we were determined not to cave and let him sleep with us. Otto is full on, he's loads of energy, everyone who meets him says that he's a party animal, He loves to be with us but now views his crate as his chill out place and is very happy in there. The puddles don't last long, if he chews anything, a little dab of cayenne pepper on what he's chewing soon stops that! You will all fall in love with him and he will be part of your family, you'll then forgive any naughtiness:) xxx

ReplyDeleteWhat a cutie. Our terriers are 12 & 13 now. All I can say is set boundaries from the off like you would do with children. It's amazing how quickly puppies learn. So long as he knows he's not the pack leader you'll be okay - there will be wee accidents and tantrums but he'll still steal a part of your hearts.

ReplyDeleteCrate train the little guy from the beginning. Most of the time he will be out of the crate when your home but otherwise it's makes a safe den for a puppy plus the best thing for house training. Put a hot water bottle & warm blanket and a stuff animal in the crate at night and he will feel safe. Never use the crate for punishment just his own little personal place. Before you know it he will go in for naps.
ReplyDeletePlus puppies are always under foot while cooking etc so just pop him in the crate when needed so he doesn't get stepped on.
I am probably not the best person to comment on puppies right now - ours is driving me crazy. He has chewed my Church pew in the kitchen four times until I dragged it into the dining room and shut the door but people keep telling me he will grow out of it. I coudl go on but I don't want to pee on your excitement! The girls still cuddle him everyday and we have had him since April so I am glad they still have time for him. Good Luck! Jo x

ReplyDeletecongratulations, I am sure it the good will out weigh the bad, How exciting for you all. I say crate train too, I didnt but wish I had because I have a few friends who did and there puppies were so much better and loved going into their crate.

ReplyDeleteWhat a darling boy, does he have a name yet? Do not expect to sleep .... for ages. When he sleeps you will be so knackered that you too will crash out. Do not expect to do housework, crafts, or anything else. As others have said, "think newborn ... twins!!!"
ReplyDeleteOur Daisy is part whippet - they have such a fabulous nature and are far more clever than many give them credit for. Oh, and they DO like to be warm and comfy .... especially warm :-)
Sorry, hit 'return' and it published ... meant to say that crates are wonderful when used as the pup's "safe haven" and place to retreat to, but never ever for punishment. They don't have to be noisy, rattly metal. Look on Amazon (or similar) and there are loads of fabric ones made from similar material to rucksacks - very light and portable. And as whippets really do feel the cold, we use a pet 'electric blanket' on a timer to ensure heat all night long, as a hot water bottle will get chilly by 3.00am.

ReplyDeleteHow wonderful! We've got a whippet called Roger. He was 1 last week. First whippet, first dog in fact. It was exhausting to start with....i really did wonder if we'd made the right decision a few times especially when he couldnt yet go out for walks as he hadn't had his jabs. If you ever want to talk whippets with me feel free! We also crate trained and took him to puppy training classes. We all absolutely adore him!

ReplyDeleteI forgot to say that my husband and I sorted out the puppy in shifts. I got up early to take him out for a wee and clear up any mess from the night. Steve stayed up (I was in bed by 9!!!) and took him out as late as possible. We bought two fleecey liners for his crate (I think they're called VetBed or something like that). We used puppy pads but he seems to wee/poo anywhere but them in his crate! We took him out for a wee e-v-e-r-y single hour during the day and after meals and praised him lavishly every time he did the deed. Our neighbours must've thought us mad....two formerly normal humans heaping praise for a wee wee on this tiny puppy!!! He used to go absolutely mental in the evening and went through a bitey phase that was pretty tedious but it does all pass.

We had a puppy twelve months ago and at first it was difficult for us to adjust to her and all her demands but adventurly she got us trained and now I think she's very happy with us🐶🐶

How lovely! We've had our new pup "Keith" for two weeks and he is amazing. Taking a bit of getting used to a little one again as our old dog was 12 when he died. We always have english springer spaniels, but we once had a whippet x as a rescue, She was the most well behaved and loving dog ever. Enjoy your new family member and I hope you have many happy years together x
