Inspired by Annie, here are ten random things:
1. The contents of my handbag today: 1. lightweight cotton scarf, 2. wallet (I like the ones that zip up all around the edge), 3. lipbalm, 4. sylvanian family toy (no idea how that got in there), 5. re-usable shopping bags, 6. pens, 7. buttercups, picked by Angus, 8. sunglasses, 9. A DVD (Game of Thrones) ready to post back to Love Film, 10. tissues, 11. filofax. There would usually be a lot more used tissues and scrunched up receipts but I swapped bags last week and had a clean out.

2. I never wear lipstick or lipgloss - I hate the sticky feel of it - but I am addicted to lipbalm and get through tubes of my favourite brand (the one above). I bulk buy it when it's on offer and keep about three tubes dotted around the house.
3. I am very broody. John says no. We are thinking about getting a dog.
4. For someone who likes nices things, I really couldn't give two hoots about cars. Ours is seven years old and a little battered (mainly by me) but the more anonymous it looks, the more I like it. It gets washed maybe twice a year. The interior is a mess of crushed bread sticks, raisins, tissues and pay & display tickets. There is a big juice stain on the middle back seat and I'm fairly sure it smells.
5. I get hayfever.
6. My first job was as a silver service waitress for a local catering company where I grew up, on the South Coast. We'd often do events on HMS Victory and HMS Warrior, which involved carrying all the plates, glasses, food etc on to the ship before the event, then off again at the end of the night. This was especially hard at high tide, when the ramp on and off the boat was very steep. It was incredibly physically demanding. We had to wear a uniform with tights and bow ties no matter how hot it was. I had no proper training and once spilled food on a bloke's dinner jacket. He didn't notice. I didn't say anything.
7. I learnt piano as a child and gave up when I was thirteen. I've regretted it ever since.
8. I love butter, salted especially. It's my weakness. Or, more accurately, one of my weaknesses.
9. I have very vivid dreams. They are like films in my head, full technicolour glory, and can affect my mood right through the day. Last night I dreamt I was in a helicopter with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Liam Neeson was in their security team. Weird.
10. For breakfast this morning I ate muesli with some chopped fresh fruit and skimmed milk. I really wanted to eat toast with butter and marmalade.

I would be ashamed to photograph the contents of my bag right now. It is overflowing with receipts and used tissues (my children's, not mine). Love your OK wallet.

DeleteI don't see the point of unsalted butter. If it's served in a restaurant, I butter my bread and then sprinkle salt over the butter. :)

DeleteI absolutely adore 'little old lady' sweets. You know the rose and violet creams? Well if they weren't so damned expensive I'd eat them every day as my treat with coffee. I love Parma Violets too but these are a poor substitute for the creams. There you go.

DeleteI think I might join the ten random things, I'll think for a bit this afternoon. As an American, I don't really understand the point of unsalted butter, either! I believe it's supposed to be for baking, but whenever I've actually followed the directions and bought unsalted butter, I usually end up thinking, "This could use more salt", haha. I just don't worry about it anymore, guess maybe I'm not cultured enough!
ReplyDeleteBaking recipes here always call for unsalted butter, then list "pinch of salt" in the ingredients! So I just think err, why not use salted butter...? I think the idea is that if you use unsalted butter and add your own salt you have more control, or something. x

DeleteI've thought about doing the ten ramdom things, but don't know where to start (maybe too "Old"). I only use unsalted butter in my cooking and seeing my children are all grown up, don't have a lot in my handbag these days. One odd thing about me is I've never had sugar in hot drinks even as a child and ask for half strength hot chocolate as otherwise it is too sweet. There that is one thing. Take care.

I too don't care about cars (mine's a bit grubby and covered in little dents and scratches). And I have vivid dreams every night, sometimes three or four of them in a row. And feeling broody? ReplyDeleteThe Sylvanian bear in your handbag made me smile - in my fantasy, that little bear decided one day he wanted to see the world, and got in your handbag, which he thought would be the perfect travelling way :-).
Don't take the flowers out of your handbag, the bear may need them if he meets a little sylvanian female bear ;-)
I'm going to stop my fantasy now, before this comment will turn into a children's book...

DeleteI love this idea, my very first job while in sixth form was as a waitress although it was in a local pub. The chap I poured gravy down did notice though.

DeleteI could not live without butter and if I had to give up everything else I would live on butter. Random fact - When I started teaching I used to teach the daughter of the drummer in Simply Red. I would go red and giggly when he came to pick her up, but I did get free tickets to one of their gigs at the Manchester Apollo.

ReplyDeleteNo I have not, but thank you for the tip, I will look out for it! M&S do a divine butter with big salt crystals in it, perfect for smearing on bread, but I expect the Aldi one is half the price. :-) x
DeleteI'm the same with no.4. I think when you have young kids it's impossible to care about cars. Mine is dusty and messy. There are mud marks from rainy shoes in the back, pencils, lego, school pamphlets, half used sweet packets. I think when the bears get their own wheels then perhaps i'll start to take pride in what I drive! Until then, it gets us all from A to B.

My random fact: I developed a love of the smell of rubber whilst pregnant and it has never quite gone away. I am the one to be found lurking next to gym shoes in the shoe shop! x
Did you? That's so interesting! I have always loved the smell of pharmacies, that sort of medicinal, antiseptic smell mixed in with other fragrances, and breathe deeply whenever I go in to Boots! x

Two years ago I was complaining to my mother that pens disappear from this house all the time, I was terribly grumpy about it, so for Christmas she sent me a red velvet stocking full of *200* of those very same pens! I hate to say it, but it was one of the best gifts ever! Chrissie x

DeleteLove your list Gillian. I am so with you on the butter, I can eat it straight out of the tub. Our car is a tip too. It is eleven years old and we are about to buy a new car and I am not sure I am up to the responsibility of keeping it feral free. I have been only eating white bread and butter for five days and am dreaming about muslie and fruit ( I am having a colonoscopy tomorrow). I hope you post again tomorrow as I will need distraction from the fact I will be very very hungry. mel x

DeleteI'm a fan of the random Posts. Unsalted butter is like low fat cream, they should be banned! If baby no. 3 truly is not on the cards can I recommend a Whippet? They are about as much work as a child. Couldn't care less about cars either and ours is a frightful sight right now. I'd happily have Liam Neeson on my security team :-) Mel x

DeleteWhat a brilliant list. For a start, I can't believe you can get so much in your handbag! It must be huge. I also don't like wearing lipstick but have to keep applying lip balm from the various tubes/pots/sticks I have all over the place. My dreams are also very vivid and affect the rest of my day - there's always a sort of mood (could be good or bad or tense or whatever) that's there for the rest of the day. As for my car; it's thirteen years old, a mess inside and only gets washed by the nice man at the garage when it goes to get serviced. Thanks for the laugh! Oh, here's my random fact - I was born in Peru and have lived in Northern Ireland since I was 5.

Delete:) hey, i wrote a message on your full time mom is enough post, which got eaten. It is enough. It is more than enough. We need to value SAHM's far more in our society. I wish I was one. Right now I have no choice (breadwinner), but maybe that will change again, I hope so. I believe it is important for children to be raised by their parents as much as possible where possible and for parents to be able to go to school to volunteer, see the easter parade ( I missed Trouble's :( ), cheer them on at athletics, and be available to be present in their childhood. It is hard to do when you come home late, stressed and exhausted. I wish our society would support parents more. Instead there is this counterproductive 'it should be as hard for you as it was for me'' attitude.

DeleteWe got a puppy because my five year old son really wanted one and baby three wasn't an option. Nine months in my son loves his dog dearly but my goodness they are a lot of work. They may be harder than children at the start!

DeleteI really enjoyed reading about your random facts! Your bag must be very tidy, mine is always quite disgraceful I have to say. I'm with you on the car thing, I have no interest in cars at all and neither does my husband...ours is pretty old and a bit scratched in places. Random fact....in the secret santa at work this year, I received a "granny wig" complete with hairnet and bun! I assume this is because of my not well hidden love for teacups, knitting and crochet! I was actually delighted with it ;)

DeleteI was amazed how much I have in common with you, and then I read the other comments and it seems I'm not alone! Lip balm (never lipstick) dotted all over the house, a car that is washed twice a year, hayfever, a love of butter, muesli for breakfast, vivid dreams and giving up the piano too young - it's all me. I have three pens in my bag, one for each child in case we go somewhere with a trail - it is not possible to share without drama! DeleteI could never find those kind of pretties in my hand bag... it's always filled with baby wipes, bits of dolls, bobbins, old tissues but i would have two or three vaseline post or lip balms in there for sure! I do like the randomness though.. and the being nosey part! I like that too :) Hazel x
ReplyDeleteHazel, when Angus was younger, there would have been wet wipes, dummy caps and probably a few tubes of nappy rash cream too. I still take wet wipes if we're going out for the day though. x

I will of course agree with Mel about the importance of having a whippet in your life. My first was a baby substitute when the mister wouldn't agree to baby number five, and now we have five whippets!

DeleteLurchers are lovely, but having co-founded/run a whippet and lurcher rescue in the past I'd always recommend a whippet to a family with young children. Whippet pups are wild, but in the best possible way, and an adult whippet will be the most loyal and loving dog you could could ask for.
DeleteI'll join the club, then… sadly, salted butter is hard to find here in Switzerland so I love it in Britain and Brittany :) Hayfever, check. I don't care about car status but mine had to be the same model as the old one so I had to buy a 7 yr old one, and now my hubs is getting a 7 yr old car, too LOL (he kept wanting to buy me a posh one but I kept refusing!). I never learnt an instrument properly but my daughter had lessons, had to stop at 12 but still loves playing and does so for her own entertainment - great investment for us as parents! I use a tiny handbag that is very organised and always have a spare doggie baggie for my spaniel - child no. 3 is now 18, so I got both ;o!!

I could care less about cars too...as long as the one I'm driving is safe (mine is a 13 year old volvo, and we have a 10 year old 15 passenger van for the family), and I also regret not being able to play the piano (after many years of lessons). DeleteLike so many others you are describing my car, but I don't like salt. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats, too old to be broody! A couple of my own random facts. I spent 2 years in a convent school, though not a catholic, I've been unsuccessfully married twice, I was auditioned to present a community TV programme (unsuccessful obviously), i wanted to be a film director and the careers advisor told me to take a secretarial course, so I did! Xx

I'm doing my annual reading of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and one of the characters keeps visiting me in my dreams this week (Remy, for those who know the book). Needless to say, you have my complete sympathy. Except for then they are fabulous, heart lifting dreams...and then I'm very happy for you.
ReplyDeleteBizarrely I was thinking about that book today! It's a great read. They are not that vivid every night, thank goodness, but I'm encouraged to know that I'm not alone and also that I'm not going mad! x
DeleteI always seem to have a bottle of Arnica and rescue remedy in my bag too, not quite sure what catastrophy I think I will avoid with those, but they are always there! My first job was a saturday girl in the local wimpey bar. They were a tough bunch of girls, the cooks used to see how many girls they could make cry. ( i wasn't a cook!) We used to duck down behind the counter and eat whole flake bars at once, from the knickerbocker glories! Heather x

DeleteI love your random things. I also get hay fever (trees and spores) but not during the grass season...roll on June! Love salted butter. My car would be the same way if it wasn't for the ABO. He's very fastidious when it comes to the car (actually he's very tidy and puts me to shame!) and takes great pleasure in it being clean and tidy, there's time for a quick dust at the traffic lights!!

DeleteLoved your random facts and we share some of them - I don't like lipstick/lipgloss, I get hayfever and I also have vivid dreams. I heard somewhere that some people dream in black & white which seems really odd - mine are full technicolour - the weirdest was when a load of voodoo people rampaged through my workplace randomly shooting people. My dreams aren't usually so violent! Does that count as a random fact? If not, I'm allergic to the whitening ingredient in whitening toothpastes. x

ReplyDeleteI love salted butter too (especially with real sea crystals and on fresh baguette) and my purse is an Orla Kiely one too but from the tapestry range.
A random fact from me: my first (summer) jobs were cleaning holiday appartments in a ski resort (luckily I was in charge of the kitchen while my friend did the toilets and bathroom), grape harvesting (totally exhausting and back breaking but great atmosphere and great great fun) and working in childrens holiday camps!
I played the piano as a child and gave up at 13 too. I adore butter and often double it in recipes and I'm always broody too, Mr H says no which is probably why our pet quota is growing. xo
