Friday Happies

It's raining and has been for the past two days, and probably will all weekend long. I am just getting over a horrible cold/throat virus thing that's left me feeling tired and a bit bleugh, a lacklustre.

But never mind, it's Friday! Even better, it's half term next week, yay! No Sunday evening school uniform ironing for me this weekend. No packed lunches to make every morning next week. A break from spellings and reading, after school activitties and rush, rush, rush. And so it's time to dig deep and find those pockets of happiness, to remember those wee moments that made me smile and lifted my spirits this week.

1. Lilac, "foraged" (ahem) from a tree overhanging the old railway line. It smells utterly divine.

2. My new favourite breakfast: porridge, strawberries and maple syrup.

3. The alliums in the garden are looking spectacular.

The bees like them too.

4. A perfectly new, pristine, freshly unwrapped bar of soap. It's like when you break the seal on a new jar of instant coffee with a spoon. I wish I liked instant coffee, just for that pleasure.

5. A spring ritual, taking my patchwork quilt off the bed, washing and line drying it, then packing it away until next autumn. Then it's another joyful ritual to get it back out in six months time.

Hurrah for simple pleasures! I feel better just for writing this post. Have a great weekend everyone. Come back Mr Sunshine, we miss you.

  1. Fingers crossed for sunshine indeed! I also pinched some lilac, absolutely beautiful smelling flower, i'd forgotten how lovely it was! Hope you have a super bank holiday! x

  2. I hope you're feeling all better soon. I also "foraged" my lilacs this year, from the end of the driveway of a house that I'm fairly certain nobody lives in. That, or they're the quietest people in the world who never need to leave for any reason. :) Your breakfast looks delicious, I'll try that combination soon.

  3. I love your alliums, ours seem to be blooming too and your patchwork is so lovely hanging on the line- I'm not quite as confident about the warm weather and have a hot water bottle waiting in bed for me still!

  4. ahh, soap! I have a half written blog post entirely about soap. I am a lover of handmade soaps, and boutique soaps. I can't remember the last time we had supermarket soap in our house. And lilacs..my favourite

  5. Lovely simple pleasures Gillian. Your alliums are amazing, so beautiful and the one with the bee is lovely. I hope that you have a great weekend and half term and that you are feeling much better very soon. xx

  6. I hope you are feeling better soon, Gillian. Your breakfast looks really good and healthy! I just love your purple alliums! I need those in my garden. And your patchwork quilt is so gorgeous. I really want a patchwork quilt for our bed some day. I hope the rain stops soon!

  8. Lovely happies again and ones I can so relate to. Love porridge, need to get alliums as everyone I've read tonight seems to have them and they are beautiful and I love, love, love almond soaps, almond lattes, marzipan, toasted almonds.....just almonds really!

  9. Gillian, I too hope you and yours will be/stay well! My oldest daughter's family went on vacation last week and came down with a horrible flu :( Although they were better when they got home the only ones in our household of 11 who have not developed it yet this week are my youngest daughter and my 7mo. old granddaughter! At her worst 4yr. old Molly asked her parents if she was dying :( and now a week later she had another little bout of it, but seems fine now, thankfully. We are fumigating with bleach!!! Thanks for sharing your reasons for happiness. They cheered me up and helped me remember that even though it is raining here, too, the red rhododendrons are beautiful, and we all are getting better :)

  10. I do hope you're feeling properly better soon. Porridge is my favourite breakfast, but with raisins and a little Manuka honey ... I swear the latter helps to keep colds at bay.

  11. Hi Gillian, I hope you're feeling well again for half term - it will be nice to have a chance to recharge the batteries! I'm very envious of your almond soap; unfortunately, anything but the most boring colour and perfume free ones bring me out in eczema but I do love the smell of nice soaps. Love your patchwork quilt too - I'm hoping that my 'Fifty Quilt' looks even half as good eventually! Have fun this week - just more GCSE revision for us to look forward to! x

  12. Hope you're feeling better for the long weekend...
The lilac was 'liberated' - I'm sure it's enjoying the change of scene and being the star attraction in your room. And opening new things, like bars of soap (or chocolate!), is nice.
Must buy some maple syrup. Pancakes are sure to follow.

  13. Ah yes the simple pleasures....no packed lunches and uniform to iron....but not only that no work clothes to iron for me either.....a week off work....yippeeeeee! That soap looks interesting, is it a particular flavour....I love the foraged lilac....I treated myself to stocks yesterday, the scent is glorious....enjoy your week :-) xx

  14. Hi Gillian !
I hope you're feeling better now...
Well, just the scent of those lilacs would make one feel better !
And it seems I'm not the only one who likes freshly opened soap bars :-). I even put them between my clothes in my wardrobe (smells so good, plus is a good remedy against moths - those can be a real pain in the #%° when you're living in a rural area...)
Hope you have a lovely weekend !
    Xxx, Ingrid

  21. Hope you're feeling better soon. I love happy posts like this. I keep telling my husband to look for the little things in everyday life that make him happy, as he has tendency towards pessimism & only focussing on the big, negative, stressful things which only gets him down (his whole family are the same!) I love to focus on little things like a vase of flowers, a picture drawn by one of the children or something funny they have said, and it always puts the rubbish things into perspective. Happy bank holiday weekend!

  22. Sorry to read you've been poorly, and hope you're back to full strength soon. A week of lots of fun and relaxation should help at least. Enjoy the break and here's hoping the sun comes back soon!
Love your happy pics, your quilt looks so pretty & fresh.

  24. Yay for half term, I love it as there is no rushing around in the mornings & yes not faffing around with uniforms is always a boon! Roll on 8 weeks for summer holidays. Sorry you haven't been feeling well, hope you have a lovely relaxing half term week!

  25. Hope you are feeling much better soon. I love a good rainy weekend when I am not feeling good, I rest more when the sun is hiding.

  26. Hope you're feeling a little better now and you can enjoy your weekend.
My mum will be so impressed that you like a bar of "proper' soap, she thinks she's a dying breed where soap's concerned and really hate's as she refers to it, that squirty stuff!

  27. I hope you've managed to shake of the nasty bug and have a little sunshine - it's shining here between showers but I know other parts of the country are very wet.
Such lovely happies - I love the smell of lilac in the house, we have a tree in the garden but I usually forget to cut any until it's too late!

  28. Very pretty quilt, lovely hanging out on the line. Hope you are feeling better.

  29. What a pretty post Gillian.... today's been miserable here in London but as I am studying, I don't care too much... less temptation to be in the garden procrastinating.... :-)
I love your quilt, in my favourite shade of blue and that allium is simply gorgeous... we do need to look after the bees, don't we? There is a documentary I watched earlier this year through Lovefilm about the issue of the disappearance of bees that it is quite scary.... have you watched it? I was thinking of planting bee friendly flowers in the garden....
It is really nice to have the half term, isn't it? I feel the kids need it and usually me too....I am always ironing uniforms and cleaning shoes last thing on Sunday night as well... It will be lovely not to have to rush every morning like a loony, especially after Tuesday when I my exams will be over!
Wishing you a lovely bank holiday weekend and I hope you recover from your cold, Pati x

  30. Considering it was only a short term and full of short weeks, it is surprising how ready for a break I feel! Have a good half term and look after yourself. A week flies by!

  31. Have you tried Gamrie Goats milk soaps? I've been buying them for a few years now. I also use their Goosey Lucy's egg shampoo bar too. Very nice...no chemicals. Nice gift sets too. Have a look.

  32. Wishing the sun to come out as we will all feel better, I was a little sad when you said about not doing packup and school uniform, not that I will miss it, but my son finished school FOR EVER on Friday, finding it hard to get my head round it, the change it will bring... And my baby is all grown up....

  33. Hey Gillian,
The weather is pretty miserable here too. I love the smell of Lilac and am really lucky to have a big bush in my front garden. But yes, hooray for half term.
    Have a lovely week.

  34. I have been taking lots of pictures of the purple alliums in our garden also. They are just about the only color in the yard right now besides the green; everything is green at the moment! Love the lilac story. We have lilacs that sit right on the road, where a lot of people walk by. Last year when they were blooming, I looked out to see a woman picking some off of the bush - MY bush in MY yard. I was fuming for days. My husband said I should put a sign out this year saying, $1 per flower! Hope you feel better soon.

  35. Gorgeous alliums and great happy things in fact. That is my absolute favourite way to eat porridge too. Hope you feel better soon.

  43. I hope the weather turns for the better for your half term break. Simple pleasures and small moments of happiness are the best, and remembering them at the end of the week is great, too. Double happiness, yes? Have a lovely, unrushed break, Gillian.

  44. Lovely photos, as always Gillian. I know this makes me look stupid but when I first saw the photo of your bar of soap I thought it was something you had made to eat - toffee or fudge maybe!!
Hope you have enjoyed your weekend
