Make, Bake, Sew, Grow

Thank you for all your get well wishes. I am feeling loads better - well, still a bit tired, but who isn't - and much more like my old self again.

This weekend I have mainly been decorating, doing the housework, and eating. I think I've only actually stepped foot outside to hang out the washing or put something in the bins. There's a whole season happening outside and I feel like I'm missing it. I was moaning about this to John, about how working longer hours (and driving to school - we were able to walk to school and back in Leeds) makes me feel so disconnected from the outside world. He rolled his eyes. He works in a large air conditioned unit with no natural light. I've made it sound like a sweatshop and it's not, it's very nice really, but he said yes, this is what it's like when you work all the time. File it under First World Problems. But the woods are calling me. I want to go to the woods so much, to kick leaves and look at the changing colours and smell that damp earthy autumn smell of decay. One week until half term, one week to go.

[ Make ]

Making decisions on which wallpaper to hang in the hallway, opting for this one, and only one roll at that price.

With help from my lovely parents, John and I managed to finish decorating the hall, stairs and landing this weekend. Such a job, all those doors to paint, all those tricky angles. And while there may have been some swearing and muttering during the process, I'm pleased to say that the wallpaper is hung (by John and I!) and looking pretty flipping gorgeous. I'll write a proper post about all this when it's finished and there aren't bare light bulbs hanging from the ceiling, but here's a quick photo for now.

[ Bake ]

I have been eating all the carbs. If it's starchy, then I'm cooking and eating it, or so it appears. Recent meals have included avocado and banana on toast for breakfast drizzled with a bit of honey. Very good. Filling.

Colcannon (mashed potatoes and greens) topped with a poached egg for dinner. John does not consider this a proper dinner so this is the kind of thing I make when he's working late and it's just me with dinner on a tray and Strictly Come Dancing on tv.

John made borlito misto, a sort of sausage and lentil casserole which is delicious and perfectly autumnal, and this is the sort of thing he does consider to be a proper dinner.

And we've been making rice pudding a lot lately. Bramble jelly is the best topping. Single cream to pour over optional.

[ Sew ]

All crafty endeavours over the last few weeks have been limited to my poncho which is now very nearly finished. I just need to take some photos and then you can see it properly.

[ Grow ]

Look what John and my Dad made! Isn't is wonderful? A wood store, made from parts of my Dad's old shed.

Our winter wood store is now cosy and dry, phew. But beyond that, all other garden related activity has ground to a halt. I'm looking forward to spending some time out there next weekend, planting bulbs, tidying up, and putting the garden to bed for the winter.

Ah, half term, you can't come soon enough! Sorry for being such a rubbish blogger lately, with these random posts and no time to visit yours. All will be back to normal soon.

  1. Do hope you are soon feeling 100% and can get out and about a bit more. The house decorating is coming along nicely and the eating side looks good. Your crochet is getting there, (as is mine), and you'll certainly stay cosy this winter. Sometimes our blogging can be slow, but it is a joy when we get and do a post and catch up on reading others, so relax and enjoy when you can. Do take care and have a good week.

  2. lovely poncho, fabulous shed, and oh my that wallpaper, well done on the family effort! I have definitely been eating all the carbs this week, feel like I've been prepping for a marathon I forgot to run. Hope you are feeling better and you enjoy half term xx

  3. A clever wood store, I love the use of an old shed. Your dinner on a tray looks delicious, exactly the sort of thing I love. I think I shall try making this week and see if it acceptable as a dinner round here. The new wallpaper is fantastic, you've made a beautiful job of it. Love the action shot of a boy in motion as well. Wishing you a good week, with a few minutes outside enjoying the autumn. CJ xx

  4. Glad you are feeling better! And you MUST get outside soon! Autumn is such a wonderful time of year. Don't let it pass you by! I know what you mean about "all the carbs." It must be this time of year or something. We actually went 4 dinners in a row around here without any green veg. Very unusual for us! Your wallpaper is gorgeous! I need to add something like this to our stairwell. It's calling out for some colour, too. Have a wonderful week, Gillian!

  5. Hello! I have been catching up on your posts as I have been MIA for the last 5 months. Mr H is EXACTLY the same when it comes to what constitutes a meal. Sometimes I like scrambled eggs on toast or toasted sandwiches which he says are not true dinner meals. I love reading your posts as you start bunking down for the colder months. We are gearing up for summer, looking forward to feeling some warmth on my shoulders. Elaina xo

  6. I love colcannon and poached egg but never had it together, what a good idea. Funny how we all have different ideas of what constitutes a 'proper' dinner, isn't it? I hope things slow down for you soon, with half term and working hours turning to back to normal. Seeing your hall makes me realise just how desperately our house is in need of a make over! It looks great. Your hall, not my house. Have a lovely week Gillian. xx

  7. I LOVE that wallpaper - so gorgeous. I'm also really envious of your log store - our logs form a teetering pile in the garage which you go near at your peril! A log store is definitely on our 'must get' list. Colcannon and poached egg sounds just the ticket for a cold autumn evening. Have a great week. xx

  8. Oh your wallpaper is gorgeous Gillian! And your log store is brilliant! Our logs are stored in a small mountain in the garage which is in constant danger of collapse. I'm going to show Colin yours and hope he might take the hint! ;) Bee xx

  9. Good to know you're better! And once you've had a chance to recharge your batteries (by being out in the garden and maybe a nice long walk in the woods), you'll be 100 % "you" again :-)
I remember your post about the wallpaper. Yours wouldn't have been my choice (I liked the blue-turquoise-ish one best), but it looks very bright and cheerful in that corner.
The wood shed is great! And so are your meals, apart from the rice pudding which I'd gracefully leave all to you :-)

  10. It seems that men all over the world have the similar ideas on what constitutes a meal and what is, at the best, a side dish. Your wallpaper looks gorgeous and oh so neat, but then, your whole house does. Try to find some time for outdoors, even 15 min walk can help. Xx

  11. Gillian you are such an inspiration. The wallpaper is gorgeous, warm in winter and fresh in summer. I own a marimekko red poppy wash bag which is aeons old but what would I give for more of that uplifting pattern. It is a big job decorating the hall, stairs and landing so I'm impressed you finished it in a weekend. I think your solo supper sounds just the ticket especially when followed by rice pudding. Don't forget the clocks change next weekend so perhaps try to get out after school and scuff some leaves and collect conkers with the children. Here's hoping we get some sunshine this week.

  12. Oh my goodness. All that food looks so yummy! You had me at rice pudding. Hope you get to the woods soon. Take care of you. Get your iron levels checked and get on the vitamin D supplements - for reals. I had been feeling dreadful but a B12 shot and daily iron and vitd have made a massive difference. Oh and the wallpaper is amazing. Fantastic job xxx

  13. Gillian you are not a rubbish blogger. You are living life and it is like that sometimes - s**t just has to be done. if it makes you feel better Andy painted the hall stairs and landing in the Spring, then ran out of paint and on the third floor we have a brush edge mix of the old paint and the new all around the girls bedroom doors! We can't actually remember what colour it was now to buy a new tin. Heyho! no one got injured. Your paper is amazing. Job well done. Jo x

  14. That's a fine-looking woodstore – I do like a stacked pile of wood! It's that time of year when hearty stews and rice pudding are just the sorts of food you need (but I'd be happy with colcannon and poached egg too!). Your hallway is looking fab. That wallpaper but it works really well. Have a good week and I hope it flies by for you :-) Sam x

  15. I know exactly what you mean about getting outside - I am hatching half term plans for long, conker collecting walks. But how lovely to have finished the hall and landing! Your house is beautiful, and will be a real refuge on freezing, grey February evenings. Thanks for sharing your weekend with us.

  17. I haven't had much time for blogging recently either. Hopefully I'll get more time for it soon. I work in an air conditioned office - and I expect it to soon be circulating every type of cold and nasty bug round us all - where I seldom even see the outside world. Sometimes I just try to work out what on earth I could do to be able to leave! I love those sorts of dinners that most people wouldn't consider a proper dinner. I even like things such as a big bowl of rice pudding for my dinner rather than for after dinner. Looking forward to seeing your finished poncho - just in time for the cooler weather.

  18. Don't you find you have times when the blog needs to take a back seat to life for one reason or another? I, too, am desperate for the half term to start. Can't come soon enough x

  19. Your avocado breakfast looks divine. I shall be trying that myself as soon as the avocados I bought today soften up. I too have (many) hall doors to paint, but I'm anxious to be out in the fresh air enjoying my favourite season. Hope you get your walk in the woods soon.

  20. Hey Gillian,
I had the exact same supper the other night. I like was lap meals when Marc is away during the week. Love the wallpaper, and I'm really impressed that you hung it too. I would have just stood there and cried. And the serendipity of Angus in his matching red trousers. I am looking forward to half term too. This working lark stops all the fun.

  21. Oo I do love a wood store - makes me think of all those warm cosy evenings to come. I know exactly what you mean about working full time, I was feeling like I lived my life indoors and yet really I am very much an outdoor person. It's easier in the summer when you can spend time outside in the light evenings. Make the most of the weekends if you can - and enjoy half term!

  22. That's a lovely wallpaper you've chosen and you both did a great job --your hallway looks fantastic! Can't wait to see more photos soon and your poncho too. I bet it feels so nice and cosy to wear. I'm looking forward to half-term too. Just three more days to go! X

  23. Your wallpaper is so fabulous! It really looks great. All of your food looks delicious, too. I know you are looking forward to half-term soon. I'm sure it will be a much needed break for you.

  25. Your wallpaper is beautiful, Gillian. I wish I had the decorating guts to do something like that. It would really spruce up our very boring entry foyer. I'm glad you're finding time to cook and I'm sure you'll do more of it when you have more time soon. Take care and hang on, it's almost here.

  26. Your Marimekko wall is glorious Gillian! It's truly inspiring as I try to figure out my own wallpaper situation :) My husband doesn't ever consider eggs as a proper dinner, whereas I want an egg on almost everything. Colcannon with an egg is a great meal. I made rice pudding for the first time on friday, using the recipe on Posie Gets Cozy. It's really good, although Gianna declared that it is 'too sweet.' How can that be possible?

  27. Colcannon and poached egg - real comfort food and a proper dinner in my book. Love that vibrant red wallpaper. Have a lovely week xx

  29. So glad to hear you're feeling a bit better. I sympathise - I'm getting over a bout of flu, but am lucky that I don't have anyone to care for at the moment, and my part-time work is very flexible and completely in my control. I admire how you've managed to do so much, whilst still not feeling 100%.
Hope you manage to get a bit of down-time over half term! All good wishes (and wallpaper envy! I could never persuade my husband to go with anything as bold and colourful as that Marimekko gorgeousness!)

  32. I really enjoy these post Gillian. I also cannot wait until half term! everything seems to have been so busy! I love the Marrimekko paper - we also got one roll of stupidly expensive paper for a wall in out bedroom. made all the difference though. The hall, stairs and landing - what a job! We had such a job keeping our children off the freshly painted woodwork - freshly eggshelled woodwork - it's like a magnet to small children. I completely get the difference of opinion in what constitutes a "proper dinner" here the ABO cannot see egg fried veggie rice as a proper meal! Or fish cakes and poached eggs. They're lunches. or a snack when you;ve ahd a really big midday meal. When I was a child we'd always have spag bol when my dad was away as to him that wasn't a proper dinner - although it is now. Strange hey? Hope your week is going really well. Here's to a sunny and restorative half term xx

  33. Oh, autumn! We're loving the evenings coming in - so cosy and warm. I love the wall paper - I'm looking to you for inspiration as we've just moved into a 16th century cottage and are trying to blend sympathetic decor with our love of 60s/70s prints and shapes.

  34. Well done on the decorating. Our hall, stairs and landing have had bare plaster for more years than I care to remember!
Looks like the kitchen (and your hard work) is providing lots of autumnal offerings.
I'm looking forward to a crunchy scrunchy leaf walk next week too.

Hello there! Thank you for leaving a comment. I read them all and I always try to answer questions, although sometimes it takes me a while.
