Hasn't the weather been absolutely glorious this week? Just beautiful. Even up here in the North East (where we've spent a lovely few days) it's been sunny and mild. I say "even" as I have been coming here long enough to know that it always feels cooler up here, and that the cold north sea wind blows hard. On Wednesday we visited Seaham beach, on the Durham coastline. It's not somewhere I'd been before, but since reading Caroline's post last summer, I was very keen to go. Seaham beach, it turns out, is absolutely full of sea glass. Seriously, I have never seen so much in one place before. We found all this in the space of a couple of hours:
Not to mention this pottery:
I was particularly keen to find some "end of day" glass, so called because the local glass factories (long since closed) would tip waste glass into the sea at the end of the working day. It tends to have variegated patterns and different colours. This was our haul:
The pink piece (pink sea glass!!) is about 1 cm across, to give you some idea of scale, so quite small.
Looking for sea glass is enormously, incredibly, relaxing. It was absolute heaven to wander up and down the beach, scanning the pebbles to see what treasure lay hiding there. John and the kids joined in.
Actually, Bella is completely obsessed with sea glass and has appropriated all that we found on Seaham beach to add to her already quite large collection. There are also some excellent rock pools and on a warmer day I'd have been in them, flip flops on, paddling around.
Occasionally we would find a kind of seam of glass, a small area rich in it, and if you pushed your hands in and under the pebbles there was more hiding, waiting to be found. It's a cliche to say that a piece of wet beach glass glistens like a jewel, but it's true, it does.
And of course the fun doesn't end when you leave the beach, as when you get home you get to play with the treasure, sorting and arranging your haul. Look, it's like a paint box of colour.
If you want to read more about Seaham sea glass, Emma of Silverpebble wrote a great post about it, and if you type "Seaham Sea Glass" into a search engine there is a lot more information out there.

Thank you for your kind words about our new home and all your good wishes. I am sorry I've been such a bad blogger lately, not visiting or saying hello, but I'll be back properly soon. Not having broadband has been both liberating and constraining. I've had a much, much more time to do other things without the siren call of the laptop, but often, when I've just wanted to check something (bank balance) or buy something or look something up, I've really missed it. And I've missed you all too.
Gorgeous sea glass, I've heard good things about Seaham, I love the different colours. We've picked up lots locally, but mostly green, with a bit of blue and brown. The red and pink is wonderful. Emma makes such beautiful things with hers doesn't she. CJ xx
ReplyDeleteLovely! I haven't been to the seaside for ages... 18 months or so! I'd love to spend an afternoon collecting seaglass!
ReplyDeleteThose pebbles are so beautiful. I have seen the odd piece of sea glass but never in those quantities. It must have been like finding treasure for your little girl, I am sure she will spend many happy moments playing with them! Sharon x
ReplyDeleteoh how I love Seaham beach, must go again. and yes hasn't it been gorgeous weather, even further north than you it's been nice!
ReplyDeleteHow fascinating about the end of day glass. It all looks so beautiful set out like a paint box - I don't blame Bella one bit for appropriating it. Next time we're off to the beach I shall be keeping an eagle eye out for a pink bit! Have a great weekend. xx
ReplyDeleteLovely treasures, I've never seen any sea glass on the welsh beaches I visit. I do like visiting rock pools though x
ReplyDeleteOh wow, this sea glass is amazing. The colours are just fab. The beaches we visit are not yielding any sea glass at all :-( Have a lovely weekend. x
ReplyDeleteLove the pretty colours - I could see the rainbow as inspiration for a blanket or cushion! :) Glad to see you've all had fun. x
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful colours of glass!!! They are wonderful aren't they. I can totally see why Bella is keeping them all to herself! She must love having such a great collection. I can imagine the circle of pieces in a frame, but would have no idea how to keep them all in place!! xx
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely treasures. I love the way the sea makes it so smooth. Lovely pics of the beach too Gillian. Have a great weekend xx
ReplyDeleteOh I am enchanted by the sea glass, it is so very beautiful. I love to go treasure hunting on the beach, and usually set myself a little challenge, eg today I will collect only stones with holes in them, or only stones that have stripes, or only pieces of driftwood smaller than my thumb. I have a little bowl full of round, flat stones like buttons that I collected on the beach on holiday in Northumberland (that days challenge: only stones that are flat and circular!) I am sure your daughter will have so much fun sorting and organising her glass pebbles. Lovely post, thank you. X
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful! I would love to fill a jar with the sea glass.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you found all of that sea glass on one beach! I only taught my kids about sea glass last year and now they search for it whenever we are near water. Their plan is to gather it all over the world. We have a jar full from France last year, some from the lake near my mother's home and some from the lake right near our home. I see a lifelong collection on the verge....

I love collecting sea glass; it really does feel like treasure. Loving your sea glass rainbow - lucky you to live so near to the sea; cue envious sigh.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is looking quite lovely and at home on the sofa and the stove looks great, cue more envious sighing - we're hoping to get one ourselves this summer. Good luck with the rest of the unpacking and decorating; book unpacking is my favourite part of moving, once they're on the shelves it really begins to feel like home to me.
We went there last year after I read silver pebbles post ,isn't it amazing my 2 girls loved it and we went in cold February .Its a beautiful part of the world and I was glad I had learnt about seaham ( the Internet at its best!)
ReplyDeleteAll on one beach that is incredible, Your photos, as ever, are stunning. Looks like the perfect day to me. Your rainbow of coloured stones makes a wonderful tactile source for a colour work. Wish I could get a collection like yours. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have all that sea glass. I haven't been to the beach in many years but I always enjoyed collecting sea glass when I did have a chance to go. I'm glad you're enjoying your holiday break.
ReplyDeleteWow, I can't believe you found so much. I particularly love the variegated glass - so pretty - I've only seen plain on the beaches I've been to. Getting serious urges to see the sea now too. x
ReplyDeleteOh, I love this!! Had no idea that there are beaches where one will by default find more sea glass than elsewhere. I would have joined in, and laid them out in a colour circle just like you did. And I do not doubt for a second that they really glisten like jewels when still wet, because they truly do, I've seen it myself.
ReplyDeleteThe glass just makes me want to touch it! I love the thought of how long it has taken to smooth it like that. Xxx
ReplyDeleteThe pink piece of sea glass looks like a Haribo sweet!
ReplyDeleteLisa x

I love sea glass. We don't get much of it here on the Gulf of Mexico as we are sandy, but I have found some in Mexico while on vacation, it is a treasure.

I love this post and want to go to this beach now, when the sun is shining and the glass would be twinkling at me from the sand and pebbles.
